The engineering approach uses technology and scientific techniques and methods to improve the quality of our lives, both economically and socially. Engineering demands teamwork, initiative, research and analytical skills. It involves communicating with end-user customers to ensure that they gain maximum benefit from engineering solutions.
Take, for example, a new mobile phone model, a bridge, a coronary pacemaker or device, a multi-storey building, a software application that controls a building energy system, a novel product for a market that does not yet exist, a superior way to manufacture a product, or an urban water supply system. Engineers contribute to the design, operation and maintenance of these products and systems.

Herbert Hoover, President of the US (1928-1932) and engineering geologist, wrote of engineering:
"It is a great profession. There is the fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to a realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer’s high privilege."
