CAT question paper pattern: year-wise comparison (2017 to 2025)

The pattern has changed several times in the last decade, so older papers need a little care. Papers from 2020 onwards (three slots, shorter paper) are the closest match to CAT 2026.

Question counts are as listed in coaching-platform archives of the papers. Confirm the pattern for your target year from the exam's official information bulletin.

Key changes over the years

• 2024: DILR went from 20 to 22 questions, taking the paper to 68 questions and 204 marks.
• 2021: the paper was cut from 76 to 66 questions.
• 2020: slots increased to three and the paper was cut from 100 to 76 questions.
• 2015: an on-screen calculator was introduced.
• 2011: sectional time limits were introduced.
• 2009: the exam moved online.

CAT question paper difficulty level by section

CAT papers are usually moderate to difficult overall, but the hard section changes from year to year. The table below is an indicative view, since difficulty is a judgement and can differ by slot.

The takeaway is that no section is reliably easy. Prepare all three, and expect at least one section in your slot to feel harder than your mocks.

CAT VARC: what the papers show

VARC has 24 questions in 40 minutes. Roughly two-thirds of the section is Reading Comprehension, spread over a handful of long passages, and the rest is verbal ability such as para-summary and odd-sentence-out questions.

• Passages are long and dense, with long inference-based answer options.
• Questions test inference, tone, the author's main idea and application, not just facts from the text.
• Reading speed and passage selection decide your score more than vocabulary.

Try this: after each past paper, note which RC passages you skipped or got wrong, and what kind of topic they were (science, society, literature, economics). Your weak topic type is often the real problem.

CAT DILR: what the papers show

DILR has 22 questions in 40 minutes, arranged in sets of about four to six questions each. A set mixes data interpretation (tables, charts, caselets) and logical reasoning (arrangements, selections, scheduling, games and tournaments, and similar puzzles).

• Sets vary widely in difficulty, so choosing which sets to attempt matters as much as solving them.
• An early look at each set (about two minutes) helps you drop the time-traps.
• Some questions have typed-in answers and carry no negative marking.

Smart move: practise DILR in full 40-minute sectional blocks from past papers. Solving one set at a time without a clock hides the biggest skill: set selection.

CAT Quant: what the papers show

QA has 22 questions in 40 minutes. Arithmetic and Algebra supply the largest share of questions, followed by Geometry and Mensuration, Number Systems and Modern Math (permutation and combination, probability, set theory).

CAT score vs percentile (2021 to 2025)

CAT scores are normalised across slots, so the marks needed for a given percentile change every year. The figures below are indicative, as reported in coaching-platform analyses, and are not official. Always check your own scorecard.

Do this: use this table only to set a rough target. A paper scored at home gives you raw marks, so compare your performance across several papers, not against one year's percentile.

Where to find CAT previous year papers

CAT papers and answer keys come from a few places, and quality varies.

• Official CAT website (iimcat.ac.in): publishes the exam notice and information bulletin, and the official practice test usually goes live a few weeks before the exam. This is the most reliable source for the pattern.
• Coaching platform archives: Several platforms like 2IIM CAT Coaching, Cracku, MBA Hitbullseye, publish year-wise and slot-wise CAT papers with solutions. These are useful, but the solutions are the platform's own work.
• Memory-based papers: older papers are often reconstructed from candidates' recall, so small differences are possible.

When you search for a CAT question paper PDF with solutions, check three things: the year and slot are clearly named, the question count matches the pattern for that year, and the answer key is explained, not just listed.

Pro tip: if two sources disagree on an answer, solve it yourself first, then check a third source. You learn more from the disagreement than from either key.

How to solve CAT previous year papers

1. Finish the basics first

Start full papers only after you have covered the main QA, DILR and VARC topics. Before that, use past questions chapter by chapter.

2. Take papers like the real exam

Set a 120-minute timer, respect the 40-minute section limits, use only an on-screen style calculator and do not pause. Attempt the whole paper in one sitting.

3. Practise section by section too

Once a week, take one section in 40 minutes. This builds the habit of skipping and returning, which a full paper does not isolate.

4. Review before you move on

Spend at least as long on review as on the attempt. Mark each mistake as a concept gap, a calculation error, a time-trap or a wrong selection.

5. Keep an error log

Write the question type, the reason for the miss and the fix. Revisit the log every week. Repeating mistakes are the fastest marks to recover.

6. Combine with mock tests
